In his role with Newcastle City Council Ben developed eight cast bronze interpretation panels to be sited on the inward facing sides of the 4 pillars surrounding Newcastle's official war memorial at Old Eldon Square.
Ben undertook the historical research and wrote the information on the panels, as well as choosing the relevant images for casting as illustrations in the panels. The process was aided through consultation with a wide variety of relevant stakeholders.
The project was part of Newcastle City Council's and Eldon Square Shopping Centre's major refurbishment of Old Eldon Square which has succeeded in making the area a much more heavily used area both by pedestrians and those looking for an oasis in the centre of Newcastle.
Cast bonze is an excellent medium to work with where fine photographic detail is not required but the grandeur of the look and feel of bronze is. The medium is befitting of its surroundings where standard interpretative measures such as glass-reinforced plastic with digital printed content would not be. It is an expensive medium to work with but we have a well established relationship with the casters and foundry and would certainly recommend its use where appropriate.
